Delaware Safe Boating Course

Flotilla 12-09 is offering Delaware Safe Boating Courses

at various locations in southern Sussex County, DE

The course consists of one session over the course of one day.

The best way to learn about safe boating is to attend our Delaware Safe Boating course. Class subjects are presented over the course of one 8-hour day (see schedule below).

Reminder:  All persons born on or after January 1, 1978 are REQUIRED to attend and pass a Delaware Safe Boating course before operating any watercraft on Delaware waters.  The certificate must be carried at all times when operating a watercraft. 

Course subjects include:

Know your boat:  Types of hull shapes; types of propulsion systems; differences between power, sailing, and personal watercraft.

Before you get underway:  Vessel capacity; float plans; fueling; trailering; boat ramp courtesy.

Operating your boat safely:  Casting off; docking; navigation rules; navigation lights and night navigation; sound signals; aids to navigation (buoys and markers); anchoring; ECOS use.

Legal requirements:  Vessel registration and numbering; unlawful operation; personal flotation devices; fire extinguishers; navigation lights; visual distress signals; sound producing devices; personal towing (waterskiing); discharge of waste, oil, and trash; actions after an accident.

Boating emergencies:  Risk management; boating accidents; personal injuries; carbon monoxide injuries; weather emergencies; summoning help.

Enjoying watersports:  Responsibilities; paddlesports; water skiing; scuba diving; sailing; fishing; hunting.

An exam will be administered to test knowledge.  Passing certificates will be issued by mail after exam grading.

The cost of the Delaware Safe Boating Course is $20.00, which covers all course materials and personal attention from our friendly, knowledable, and courteous certified USCG Auxiliary instructors.
